The beginning of June was hot and dry and lacked some rain. It was good for me to see the areas around the course that dry the quickest. It does not necessarily have to be that hot for stressed turf to show itself. The humidity levels dropping to 40% or below have just as much or more of an impact on the turf than heat. The lower the humidity the more internal moisture content the plant loses trying to keep metabolic processes going inside the plant. We have received just under 6” of rain so far this month and I anticipate it being over that before the end.
Our greens renovation is moving along nicely. The new greens mix is beginning to arrive and is being incorporated with the existing mix. This process will take roughly a week to complete. After the mix is incorporated, we will begin the fumigation process to eliminate any unwanted weed seeds, nematodes, and remaining bermudagrass. During this process, the back nine will be shut down while the gases in the soil do their job. Signs will be posted, and greens will be roped off while this is happening.
Once the fumigation is complete, we will lightly till the greens mix again to release any gases still in the soil. Then the shaping process begins to get our contours and slopes the way we want them. As each green is checked off sod will go down for our new collars. A little more handwork will be done to bring the greens mix grade up to our collars. Then we will be ready for sprigs. It is a process and not one that can be rushed. Hopefully, the weather will continue to be cooperative as we finish out the work. Hope to see you all out on the course!
Sincerely,
Tyler Hefner, GCS-Class A
